Soaring Demand for Food Charity Services Amid Australia’s Cost-of-Living Crisis
The ongoing cost-of-living crisis in Australia is driving up demand for food charity services. Contributing factors include global instability, rising interest rates, and a worsening rental shortage, which are increasingly straining the finances of working Australians. Ann Cooper, who operates the Adelaide-based food charity Cos We Care, reported a staggering doubling in attendees over the past six months. In Victoria, Randa Beirouti, the founder of Reaching Out in the Inner West, echoed this sentiment, stating there has been an exponential increase in requests for assistance.
According to the St Vincent de Paul Society, there was a 15% increase in individuals seeking help in Australia in December last year. Furthermore, the 2025 Foodbank Australia Hunger Report revealed that approximately one in three households, equating to 3.5 million, has recently faced food insecurity.
Increased Demand for Assistance
At the start of the year, Cooper’s charity was serving about 60 people, a number that has now surged to between 100 and 120. She noted a significant transformation in the demographics of those seeking help; many individuals who are employed are nonetheless struggling with food affordability.
Some individuals have jobs but also face challenges regarding rent and other bills, while others are unemployed or do not receive any benefits. Cooper’s charity does not require proof of Centrelink or concession cards for assistance, stating, “If you consider yourself in need, we will give you food.” However, she emphasised the importance of arriving early, stating, “You have to be there at seven in the morning.”
Foodbank Australia reports that about 20% of households across the nation are severely food insecure, meaning some individuals are skipping meals or going entire days without food. The housing crisis further exacerbates this issue, with 48% of renters experiencing food insecurity, leading many to make impossible choices between rent and groceries.
In Adelaide North, where Cos We Care operates, more than 50,000 households are affected by food insecurity, illustrating the scale of the crisis.
A National Crisis
The economic situation was underscored recently when Treasurer Jim Chalmers referred to increasing global conflicts as a concern, coinciding with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to increase the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.1%. This decision, which was supported by a close vote of 5-4, reflects the uncertainty prevailing in the global economy.
During a press conference after the rate hike, Chalmers acknowledged the difficulties faced by Australians with mortgages, stating that while the decision was not surprising, it remains challenging for many.
Rising petrol prices are compounding financial stress for families, pushing up daily living costs and forcing many to curtail both grocery and discretionary expenditures. Renters and those with mortgages are increasingly finding it tough to manage rising payments alongside escalating bills, creating a heavier financial burden.
Industry analysts caution that the combined effect of higher borrowing costs and soaring fuel prices poses significant strain on the budgets of ordinary Australians, intensifying overall financial stress.
