China Launches Inquiries into US Trade Practices as the EU Progresses with US Trade Agreement

by admin

The European Union has made significant progress in its trade agreement with the United States, overcoming several weeks of delays to advance the deal. The agreement, known as the Turnberry agreement, which was initially established by US President Donald Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a meeting in Scotland last August, was adopted by EU lawmakers in a key development.

US officials had been advocating for the agreement’s swift implementation, cautioning the EU that failure to do so could jeopardise Europe’s access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, which the US would consider “favourable.” The agreement outlines a reciprocal trade framework whereby Europe would abolish tariffs on a variety of US goods, such as aircraft, chemicals, and agricultural products.

In return, the United States will apply a 15% tariff on numerous European imports and will continue enforcing 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium products. Furthermore, the deal stipulates that the EU will invest $750 billion in US energy products by the year 2028.

However, the implementation of this trade agreement faced obstacles earlier this year when the US Supreme Court annulled Trump’s broad tariffs, replacing them with a new set of 10% tariffs. This development, alongside Trump’s contentious proposals regarding Greenland, led the EU to temporarily halt the ratification process.

In a recent vote, EU lawmakers introduced additional protective measures in the agreement. A suspension clause will allow the EU to halt the deal if the US imposes new tariffs on European goods exceeding the stipulated 15%, while a sunrise clause will see the agreement expire in March 2028 unless both parties mutually decide to extend it.

The next step involves the European Commission negotiating with member states over these new provisions and finalising the legislative text of the agreement. This advancement marks a crucial step toward strengthened transatlantic trade relations.
