Brooke Jones, once a successful lawyer based in Thailand, found her life transformed by the pandemic. With travel plans curtailed, Jones returned to her parents’ home in Wollongong, where a new, unexpected passion unfolded. Initially grounded with little to do, she began creating homemade bone broth for her ageing schnauzer, Ava, who struggled with chewing.

During her experimentation, Jones accidentally discovered a method to solidify the marrow, leading her to create dog chews. This journey wasn’t straightforward; it involved countless trials, messy kitchen catastrophes, and a determination that kept her going despite challenges.

“I had pots of boiling bone marrow on the stove for hours,” Jones reminisced. “I was constantly dealing with rotting batches and household disputes over the mess. But amid it all, I realised I might have stumbled upon something special.”

Starting out as a hobby, her creations began to attract attention at local markets. When a pet shop owner expressed interest in stocking her product, Jones saw a potential for business growth. By October 2022, despite considering a return to her legal career, her growing dog treat business had generated $305,000 in its first year.

Then life threw another challenge her way. After experiencing severe health issues, doctors discovered a cancerous ovarian tumour, which required emergency surgery and a year of chemotherapy. This pivotal moment redirected her focus entirely toward her business, which she managed alongside her mother, Julie. The venture was thriving and sought bigger manufacturing spaces as demand surged.

“The chews became a hit,” she noted. “We didn’t even need advertising; the pet food industry boomed post-COVID, with wholesale sales making up 95% of our business.”

Jones’ dog chews, marketed under the brand Marrowz, gained a reputation for their high protein content (96%), low fat (0.5%), and absence of fillers or preservatives, making them suitable for dogs of all ages, particularly those with dietary restrictions. As demand escalated, she even had to shut down her social media pages due to overwhelming inquiries.

Despite the rapid success, Jones faced operational hurdles. With the projected sales reaching $1 million by the end of 2024, she recognised the need for retail expertise. This led her to pitch her business on "Shark Tank" in October 2024, where she secured a partnership with investor Davie Fogarty, who contributed $200,000 for a 25% stake. This collaboration invigorated her operations, swiftly enhancing retail revenue to $300,000 in just a few months.

Today, Marrowz is poised for a breakout year with forecasted revenues surpassing $2 million in wholesale alone. Fortunately, Jones is now cancer-free and entirely focused on scaling her business. With aspirations of expanding internationally, she embraces the ongoing challenges with resilience.

“Mindset is crucial,” she remarked. “The idea of becoming an overnight millionaire is often unrealistic. Building a business takes time and mental toughness.”
