Ducati, a prominent name in high-performance motorcycles, has introduced its most extreme and expensive road-legal bike to date: the Superleggera V4 Centenario. With a staggering price tag of $165,000, this limited edition model is restricted to just 500 units, all of which have already been sold. An exclusive Tricolore variant, even rarer at only 100 units and priced at $250,000, has also met with similar success and is sold out.
This remarkable cycle was presented shortly before the US Grand Prix motorcycle race in Austin, Texas, celebrating Ducati’s centenary. The Superleggera V4 Centenario was crafted with a guiding principle that emphasises “no constraints, no compromise, and no limits,” embodying the brand’s core values.
Ducati’s US CEO, Jason Chinnock, stated that the motorcycle truly represents a “no limit” philosophy. While development was mindful of regulations, the focus remained on style, sophistication, and performance. The Superleggera features a hand-crafted V4 engine, exotic components such as titanium intake valves, and a thrilling race exhaust, delivering an astonishing 247 horsepower while maintaining a lightweight of just 381 pounds. This impressive power-to-weight ratio is achieved through the extensive use of carbon fibre in its chassis, which includes the frame, swingarm, wheels, and bodywork.
Additionally, the Centenario introduces two groundbreaking features for a street-legal motorcycle: carbon-ceramic brake discs certified for road use and an Öhlins fork with carbon fibre outer tubes. Chinnock noted that the production has already far surpassed demand, indicating a thriving market for such elite models.
Ducati’s performance in the US is robust, supported by a diverse portfolio of 14 motorcycle models, catering to a range of enthusiasts from entry-level to high-performance categories. Chinnock reported a solid start to the year, with sales approaching a 20% increase.
Interestingly, this surge in luxury motorcycle sales occurs amid global economic uncertainties, such as conflicts in the Middle East and fluctuating oil prices. Despite these challenges, customer spending on premium motorcycles reflects the strength of the Ducati brand. Chinnock remarked that amidst chaos, people seek joy, and motorcycles often fill that role for dedicated riders.
