The Political Landscape of AI Supremacy: Trump Backs Palantir Amidst Criticism

In the evolving battle for artificial intelligence dominance, political backing has emerged as a significant factor. Former President Donald Trump has recently extended his support to Palantir Technologies (PTLR), a company that has come under fire from investors like Michael Burry, known for his role in "The Big Short." Burry has accused Palantir of losing its competitive edge in software capabilities, arguing that it is falling behind rivals like Anthropic (ANTH.PVT).

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump hailed Palantir for its "great war-fighting capabilities and equipment," challenging detractors to "just ask our enemies." Following these comments, Palantir’s stock saw an initial surge, though it subsequently reverted to a decline. Currently, the company’s shares are down nearly 30% year-to-date.

Burry’s criticism of Palantir is not new. He has consistently expressed bearish sentiments about the company, revealing a substantial short position through long-dated put options back in September 2025. His concerns centre on the notion that Palantir functions more like a consulting firm than a conventional software company, relying heavily on Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDE) to work closely with clients. This reliance on on-site solutions complicates scalability compared to off-the-shelf AI alternatives like Anthropic’s offerings, which are perceived as more straightforward, cost-effective, and intuitive.

Burry recently emphasised that while Anthropic’s revenue growth has been impressive—soaring from $9 billion to $30 billion in annual recurring revenue—Palantir has taken two decades to reach a mere $5 billion in revenue. He argues that Palantir’s close ties to government contracts hinder its profit margins and overall growth.

Interestingly, Trump’s backing contrasts with Anthropic’s position. While Palantir strives for national security contracts, Anthropic has encountered turbulence after a disagreement with the Department of Defence (DoD) regarding AI safety protocols, leading the administration to label the company as a potential national security threat.

As markets react to Trump’s endorsement, Palantir seems to be temporarily in favour, especially as it seeks to differentiate itself within the national security sector. In contrast, Anthropic’s rapid advancements in the commercial space highlight a divergence in strategy that could shape the AI landscape moving forward.

In summary, the dynamics between political support, market perception, and the contrasting business models of AI companies like Palantir and Anthropic encapsulate the current landscape, where both innovation and geopolitical interests play pivotal roles.
