Wall Street Analysts Urge Investors to ‘Dive In’ to Tech Stocks as Iran Ceasefire Unfolds

Market Volatility Amid Earnings Season: A Glimpse into Software Stocks

Recent developments, including a two-week ceasefire in Iran, have provided a brief pause for markets ahead of the earnings season. However, analysts warn that volatility is expected to persist. Despite the turbulence, artificial intelligence (AI) continues to drive investor interest, even as certain sectors, particularly software, face steep declines.

The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) has seen a notable drop of 12% over the last month, contrasting with a slight uptick in the S&P 500 index. Ben Emons, founder of FedWatch, noted on Yahoo Finance, “There’s clearly a bit of an overreaction. I’d say some of the software stocks become interesting plays, perhaps alongside utility-driven financials.”

Skepticism surrounding software companies is evident, particularly for Palantir Technologies (PLTR), which experienced a 14% decline in its shares this past week. The firm, which has attracted critical attention from notable investor Michael Burry and support from former President Trump, has been deemed undervalued by some. Mark Gibbens, Chief Investment Officer of Gibbens Capital, suggested it may be time to consider investing in Palantir, as he believes it has been unfairly categorised with other declining stocks.

Similarly, Palo Alto Networks (PANW) has faced an 8% decrease this year. Keith Gangl, Senior Portfolio Manager at Gradient Investments, believes that security software remains a priority for IT departments, regardless of the overall economic climate. He views the current share price as an opportunity to acquire a high-quality asset, stating confidently, “I think Palo Alto is a winner there.”

Oracle Corporation (ORCL) is also under pressure, experiencing a 4% share drop last week. The firm announced plans to reduce its workforce by up to 30,000 while increasing its investment in AI infrastructure. Although Oracle’s stock has plummeted 30% this year, its valuation compared to other tech giants is still considered reasonable. Tiffany McGhee, CEO of Pivotal Advisors, highlighted Oracle’s robust cash flow, pricing power, and long-standing enterprise contracts as positive aspects that position the company strongly within the AI infrastructure landscape.

Meanwhile, Nvidia (NVDA) presents a different narrative, having remained relatively stable despite recent market fluctuations. Gibbens noted that Nvidia’s stock has slipped from its recent highs, trading at approximately 21 times forward earnings, but remains a worthwhile investment in the semiconductor sector.

Molly Pieroni, President of Yacktman Asset Management, emphasised the importance of evaluating the price-to-risk balance in investments. She indicated that many stocks in the "Magnificent Seven" are overpriced for value investors. However, she acknowledged that Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) possess diverse pathways to create value through their substantial technology ventures.

Looking ahead, market analysts describe the environment as "fluid," with a transition from escalating geopolitical tensions to more structured negotiations. Michael Arone, Chief Investment Strategist at State Street Investment Management, cautioned that as long as risks associated with headlines remain elevated, the potential for downside volatility will persist.

For investors, focusing on earnings and fundamental health will be crucial in navigating this challenging landscape. Arone believes that market activity is indicative of a prevailing sentiment that resolution is on the horizon, reflecting a conviction among participants in the ongoing market dynamics.

In summary, while the current market reflects substantial uncertainty, there are still areas of opportunity, particularly in the technology sector. Monitoring the evolving landscape will be essential for investors aiming to leverage potential gains in the coming weeks.
