New Limited Edition $2 Coins Celebrating Rugby Union in Australia
Aussies making cash purchases may find themselves with a unique surprise in their change—a specially minted $2 coin featuring the Wallabies and Wallaroos. This initiative, a collaboration between the Royal Australian Mint and Rugby Australia, aims to commemorate the rich history of Rugby Union in Australia.
Design Details
The coins, designed by Adam Ball from the Mint, showcase the official logos and colours of the Australian rugby teams, complete with a stadium backdrop and two athletes depicted prominently. The reverse side of the coins carries the portrait of King Charles III.
Availability
From today, these limited edition coins are available at participating Rebel Sport stores across the country for those who pay with cash. Acting CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, Emily Martin, highlighted this release as a celebration of 150 years of Rugby Union history, coinciding with the Wallabies’ test series against the British and Irish Lions and the upcoming 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England.
“Whether you’re a passionate rugby fan or a coin collector, this is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of sporting memorabilia,” stated Martin.
Significance of the Coins
Rugby Australia’s CEO Phil Waugh remarked on the symbolic importance of the coins. They represent two significant events in the rugby calendar: the British and Irish Lions tour, which occurs every 12 years, and the Women’s Rugby World Cup, hosted every four years.
"It’s an important year for Rugby in Australia, and these coins celebrate both teams as they compete on the global stage," Waugh said, encouraging Aussies to look out for these coins at their local stores.
Collectible Options
In addition to finding them in circulation, a two-coin collector set is available for purchase, featuring a distinct design for the coloured inner circle. This set can be ordered from Rebel Sport’s website or directly from the Mint’s various sales channels, including their call centre and eShop. It will be released at 8:30 am on July 17, priced at $17.99.
Interestingly, some eBay sellers have already begun listing these $2 coins for resale, with prices reaching up to $49.45 for the pair. However, the Mint has urged consumers to purchase only through authorised channels to avoid counterfeit risks. They reiterated that items listed for sale before the official release date are not legitimate.
Conclusion
This special release of the $2 Wallabies and Wallaroos coins presents a significant opportunity for both rugby enthusiasts and collectors alike to celebrate Australia’s rugby heritage. Whether found in change at Rebel Sport stores or purchased as part of a collector’s set, these coins mark a noteworthy chapter in Australia’s sporting history.
