eBay Removes Seller Fees Amidst Changes in Buyer Costs

eBay, one of the leading peer-to-peer e-commerce platforms globally, has initiated significant changes to its fee structure aimed at encouraging more casual sellers to utilise its platform. From today, Australian users can sell their previously loved items online without the burden of seller fees, which have been removed for those making less than $25,000 a year in sales.

This strategic shift is expected to boost competitiveness against other online marketplaces such as Amazon and Facebook Marketplace, particularly as more Australians embrace side hustles to supplement their income. Anne-Marie Cheney, eBay Australia’s Head of Recommerce, explained that the decision to eliminate seller fees stems from the understanding that such costs have previously inhibited casual sellers from listing items for sale.

Previously, sellers were charged a hefty 13 per cent fee on their sale price, which many found a considerable barrier. As part of eBay’s new model, buyers will now incur a fee ranging from 4 to 8 per cent on their purchases. However, this change introduces enhanced buyer protection services, including round-the-clock customer support, marking eBay’s commitment to improving the shopping experience. Cheney noted that this fee structure is a positive shift, making it easier for buyers to trust in the quality of their purchases, and helping to ensure a smoother transaction process.

eBay had foreshadowed these changes for several weeks, and despite a previous delay, the new policies have officially launched. As the company hopes to tap into an estimated $32 billion of resale value tied up in seldom-used items across Australian households, it aims to attract more sellers to the platform, thereby fostering a thriving resale environment.

A notable voice in the eBay seller community is Matt Diedrich, widely known as Aussie Flipper. Diedrich has successfully built a brand by sourcing undervalued items from op-shops and garage sales and reselling them online. While he has surpassed the revenue threshold to qualify for the new seller fee exemption, he acknowledged the significant advantage this change offers to newcomers. Diedrich remarked on the drastic nature of these alterations, highlighting that it represents one of the most substantial shifts he has witnessed in his six years of selling on the platform.

The removal of seller fees, paired with the introduction of buyer fees and 24/7 customer support, seeks to create a more balanced ecosystem that benefits both parties. As the Australian economy faces various cost of living challenges, this strategy aligns with the rising trend of side hustles, encouraging more users to turn their unwanted items into extra cash.
