Hyperliquid: The Emergence of a Multi-Asset Crypto Super-App

Bitwise has asserted that Hyperliquid is transforming into a comprehensive financial platform that transcends traditional cryptocurrency trading. Analysts believe that the potential of the Hyperliquid platform and its associated HYPE token is currently underestimated by investors, despite the platform’s remarkable growth in trading volume.

A Broader Financial Ecosystem

Matt Hougan, the Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, posits that Hyperliquid should not be regarded merely as a crypto derivatives exchange. Instead, he advocates for viewing it as a global trading platform encompassing a diverse range of markets, including cryptocurrencies, equities, commodities, foreign exchange, and prediction markets. The platform has been gaining momentum, effectively reshaping perceptions of decentralised trading venues.

Initially gaining prominence through the trading of crypto perpetual futures, Hyperliquid has expanded its offerings to include commodities, pre-IPO stocks, and various prediction markets. According to Hougan, non-cryptocurrency assets currently represent nearly half of the trading activities on Hyperliquid, and this figure is expected to reach around 70% by year-end.

Impressive Trading Volume

The platform has achieved substantial monthly trading volumes, with approximately US$170 billion (AU$239.7 billion) reported. Hougan described Hyperliquid as one of the most rapidly growing entities in the financial sector. However, he acknowledged certain constraints faced by the platform, including its lack of presence in the US market and the necessity for enhanced regulatory compliance.

The Unique HYPE Token Buyback Model

One of the standout features of Hyperliquid is its token buyback model, which has attracted the attention of analysts. Hougan pointed out that 99% of the platform’s generated fees are dedicated to repurchasing HYPE tokens. This mechanism aligns the demand for the tokens directly with the platform’s usage, fostering a connection between user activity and token value.

Bitwise estimates suggest that Hyperliquid is generating between US$800 million to US$1 billion (AU$1.13 billion to AU$1.41 billion) in annualised revenue. Notably, this is occurring while the platform maintains lower valuation multiples compared to established firms like Robinhood and CME Group.

In summary, Hyperliquid is rapidly evolving into a multifaceted financial platform with significant implications for both the cryptocurrency and broader financial markets. With its innovative approach to trading and token economics, the platform holds substantial potential for future growth and investor interest.
