Tim Cook Steps Down as Apple CEO; John Ternus to Succeed Him

In a significant announcement on Monday, Apple revealed that Tim Cook will resign as CEO effective September 1, having held the position since 2011. He will be succeeded by John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, while Cook will continue to serve as chairman of the board.

Following the announcement, Apple’s stock price saw a slight dip of less than 1% in after-hours trading.

In his statement, Cook expressed deep gratitude for his tenure at the company. “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” he declared. He praised Ternus’s qualifications, stating, “John has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and honour. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition."

Replacing Cook, who was brought on board by Steve Jobs in 1998, will be a formidable challenge. Ternus has a long history with Apple, having joined in 2001 and serving as SVP of Hardware Engineering since 2013. The 50-year-old holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and previously worked at Virtual Research Systems before joining Apple.

Ternus has already made notable appearances at Apple’s flagship product events, most recently at the launch of the latest iPhone and the unveiling of the MacBook Neo. His keen attention to detail aligns with Apple’s high standards; during a speaking engagement at the University of Pennsylvania’s Engineering Commencement in 2024, Ternus recounted a meticulous negotiation with a supplier regarding the specific grooves on screws for the Apple Cinema Display. Initially offered screws with 35 grooves, Ternus insisted on the 25 grooves that Apple preferred, reflecting his commitment to excellence.

"I distinctly remember stepping back for a minute and thinking to myself, ‘What the hell am I doing? Is this normal?’" Ternus shared. In time, he concluded that this dedication was indeed warranted. "If you’re going to spend that much time on something, you should put in your very best effort," he elaborated. "Maybe a customer notices; maybe they don’t. But either way, it mattered to me to know that my teammates and I had considered everything about it."

Over his tenure, Ternus has contributed to a plethora of key products within Apple, including the iPhone, iPad, and AirPods, while facilitating the company’s evolving use of proprietary silicon chips across its device lineup.

As Cook bids farewell to his role as CEO, all eyes will be on Ternus as he navigates the future of Apple, a company renowned not only for its innovation and design but also for its operational excellence and strong leadership. The transition marks a new chapter in Apple’s storied history, one that will be watched closely by investors, tech enthusiasts, and consumers alike.
