Driving School Entrepreneur Sees Significant Success in Central Queensland

Jenna, a driving school instructor from Central Queensland, has gained considerable attention after revealing her earnings can reach up to $1,200 a day. After launching her driving school with partner Andreas in September of the previous year, Jenna reported that she is now earning significantly more than her former role as a call centre operator.

Jenna emphasised the freedom her new career brings, stating, “Not only that, I have more flexibility and freedom, which is priceless.” She highlighted how her life has changed, allowing her to set her own schedule. "If I want to go get a tan tomorrow, I don’t have to ask my boss if I can have the day off," she added.

Franchise Insights and Start-up Costs

The couple ventured into business with Jim’s Driving School, a franchise they chose after previously owning a Jim’s Mowing franchise. Jenna noted that acquiring a Jim’s franchise typically costs between $25,000 and $35,000, depending on the state. They invested in two second-hand cars—one manual, one automatic—and spent about $1,800 to install dual pedals, in addition to expenses for business cards, flyers, and uniforms.

With a competitive landscape of driving schools already established in the Mackay region, Jenna reported a rapid uptake in business. “It went off like an explosion,” she stated, mentioning that their advertising attracted eager learners who faced waiting periods of up to three months with other schools.

Earning Potential and Market Rates

The couple charges approximately $100 per driving lesson, with both instructors conducting six lessons a day. While their initial earnings were substantial, Jenna clarified, “It does need to be clearly stated that it’s two people to have that income.” Although Andreas has shifted his focus back to their mowing business, Jenna is committed to growing the driving school.

Despite scepticism over pricing from some observers, with many questioning the $100 charge per lesson, Jenna pointed out that prices can vary widely. According to the national average, driving lessons typically cost around $80 per hour, with regional variations—South Australia charging the highest at $108.78 per lesson.

Earnings in this field can be substantial, with the average driving instructor in Australia earning approximately $88,000 annually. However, it’s important to distinguish revenue from profit; Jenna mentioned that operational costs, including franchise fees and vehicle maintenance, must be deducted from gross income. She noted that after expenses, she is able to pay herself over $1,000 weekly, reinvesting the remaining profits back into the business.

Advantages of Joining a Franchise

Some have questioned why Jenna and Andreas chose to work within a franchise model rather than establishing an independent driving school. Jenna highlighted the benefits of operating under a reputable brand like Jim’s, stating, “You have an Australian, well-known brand behind you and that makes a big difference. Everyone knows and trusts Jim’s, and that trust is a significant asset.”

Qualifications for Aspiring Driving Instructors

Jenna believes that becoming a driving instructor is attainable for many, although it may suit those with a penchant for patience. Aspiring instructors must complete a Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training, available through TAFE or private colleges, along with obtaining a Working With Children Check if they intend to instruct learners under 18.

In conclusion, Jenna’s success story demonstrates the potential for entrepreneurs in the driving school industry. The combination of strategic branding, flexibility, and burgeoning demand have allowed her and Andreas to thrive in the competitive landscape of driving instruction in Australia. With a well-structured franchise behind them and a commitment to quality service, they are paving the way for future driving instructors.
