Delta Increases Baggage Fees, Joining United and JetBlue in Price Rise

by admin

Delta Air Lines (DAL) has recently announced significant increases in its baggage fees, coinciding with rising jet fuel costs that are impacting the airline industry. Effective for tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2026, the fee for a first checked bag will increase from $35 to $45, while the second bag will see a rise from $45 to $55. The most considerable increase is for travellers checking a third bag, which will now cost $200, a hike of $50.

In a statement, Delta positioned these changes as a response to shifting economic conditions. A spokesperson explained that the adjustments are part of a continual reassessment of pricing amid evolving global and industry dynamics. This move follows similar fare increases by United Airlines (UAL) and JetBlue (JBLU) earlier this year, reflecting a broader trend within the industry as carriers grapple with escalating operational costs.

These rising jet fuel prices have already started to compress profit margins for airlines. Last month, both Delta’s and United’s CEOs pointed out that the surging fuel costs have added hundreds of millions of dollars in expenses compared to the previous year.

However, it’s worth noting that the new baggage fees will not apply to long-haul international routes. Passengers who have Delta SkyMiles Medallion status, those flying in premium cabins such as First Class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One, as well as holders of certain Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards, will continue to enjoy complimentary checked baggage.

Delta is expected to provide further insights regarding these fee increases, the impact of rising fuel costs, and their financial ramifications when it announces its next earnings report.

As the airline industry adjusts to these economic pressures, travellers are advised to stay informed about potential fare increases and leverage any available travel credit card offers to mitigate costs.
