Fantasy Top to Cease Operations in June Due to Unsustainable Business Model
Fantasy Top, an NFT-based fantasy gaming platform, will officially shut down at the end of June, citing the inability of its trading card economy to support long-term viability. The decision comes after two years of operation, during which the platform garnered significant attention within crypto social media but struggled to expand beyond its initial concept.
The platform enabled players to collect and trade digital cards associated with crypto influencers, with rankings based on engagement on the platform X (formerly Twitter) rather than actual sports performance. Initially launched on the Blast network in 2024, Fantasy Top transitioned to Coinbase’s Base network in July 2025.
Despite its eventual closure, Fantasy Top distributed over US$20 million (approximately AU$28 million) to its user base and paid out US$3.2 million (around AU$4.48 million) to influencers whose images were featured in the game. In a commitment to its investors, the company confirmed that all will receive refunds for their initial investments.
Challenges Faced by Crypto Trading Card Games
The primary challenge highlighted by co-founder Kipit is the inherent conflict between the traditional trading card game structure and the volatile economics of cryptocurrency. In a post on X, Kipit noted that integrating crypto into a model not designed for it ultimately detracted from the gameplay experience, leading to a focus on speculative trading instead.
Kipit stated, “When an economy is financialised from the outset, every decision becomes more complex. You transition from game development to economic management, which can be a precarious trap.” This shift in focus is cited as a critical reason behind the platform’s decline.
Despite ongoing efforts to innovate through new products and social-financial features, the revenue generated from trading fees and NFT card activities proved insufficient to sustain long-term operations. Over the past year, various alternative approaches were attempted, but none successfully garnered enduring user engagement.
As the closure date approaches, Fantasy Top’s final fantasy competitions are set to conclude on 18 June, followed by the immediate distribution of remaining rewards and payments. Many game modes, including prediction markets, have already been discontinued prior to the service’s permanent shutdown.
Fantasy Top’s closure emphasises the challenges faced by crypto-based gaming models that seek to integrate traditional gameplay with speculative trading mechanisms, revealing a path fraught with difficulties in creating sustainable gaming ecosystems.
