Google Unveils Enhanced Search Features with AI Integration

On Tuesday, Google (GOOG, GOOGL) introduced an upgraded version of its Search product, featuring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. These enhancements allow users to pose more complex questions, create AI-driven search agents, and visualise topics using AI-generated tools.

The updates were revealed during the annual Google I/O conference held in Mountain View, California. At the forefront of the changes is the integration of the latest Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model within the Search bar, enabling users to search for various types of content including photos, videos, files, and Chrome tabs.

In a practical demonstration, one user uploaded two reference images—a dress and a piece of orange fabric. By asking Google to find a dress matching the colour of the fabric for under $150, the search provided several options followed by inquiries about the user’s size and the occasion, allowing for a tailored search experience.

Additionally, the updated Search allows for interactive dialogues, activating AI Mode seamlessly for users to maintain conversations within the AI Overview panel. This creates a more dynamic and engaging search experience.

Information Agents and Custom Search Options

Google is also introducing a feature called "information agents". This function allows users to set notifications for updates; for instance, users can receive alerts when a certain athlete launches a shoe collaboration. Such agents monitor online activity for relevant information and notify users accordingly.

For those searching for real estate, users can instruct Google to create a custom agent that searches for apartment listings matching specified amenities. Once a suitable listing is found, the agent will send an alert.

Moreover, the new agentic coding feature will facilitate various tasks. For example, users may inquire about balancing fitness routines with their schedules, to which Google will provide best practices and offer to create personalised fitness and meal trackers, utilising the user’s schedule, gym memberships, and location data.

Search Success and Revenue Growth

Google attributes its successful growth in the Search sector to the transformative influence of AI. During its Q1 earnings call, the company highlighted that user queries have reached unprecedented levels, significantly boosted by AI enhancements. Google Search and advertising revenues surged to $60.4 billion, reflecting a 19% year-on-year increase, contributing to total revenues of $109.9 billion.

In conjunction with Search improvements, Google is integrating the Gemini 3.5 Flash model into its Gemini app. Users can expect a refreshed design alongside features like Gemini Live conversational chat and the Daily Brief feature, which aggregates information from connected applications like Gmail and Calendar, summarising daily activities and recommending subsequent steps.

Introducing Gemini Spark for Personalised Assistance

Another innovative addition is Gemini Spark, a personal agent designed to manage tasks on behalf of users, even when they are not actively engaged with their devices. Users can direct Spark to review credit card statements for unnoticed subscription fees or to regularly investigate school updates regarding their children, consolidating important deadlines into a daily summary.

Google explained that users maintain control over which applications are connected to Spark, with the option to disconnect as needed. Importantly, the agent will require permission for actions like sending emails or making transactions.

For macOS users, Gemini Spark will also be available as a desktop agent, utilising personal files to execute tasks efficiently.

As Google’s Gemini app gains traction, it has seen a substantial increase in its user base, growing from 400 million to 900 million monthly active users in just one year. However, Google is facing rising competition from platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has rapidly become a preferred alternative for users seeking services similar to Google’s offerings.

In February, OpenAI reported over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million consumer subscriptions, highlighting the significant competition facing Google in the AI landscape.

As technological advancements push boundaries, Google’s commitment to integrating AI into its Search and app features indicates a strategic response to evolving user demands and competitive pressures within the digital landscape.
