The Royal Australian Mint has launched a limited-edition $2 coin to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag. As soon as the coin was released, opportunistic sellers began listing it on eBay at inflated prices, prompting warnings to potential buyers.
The Mint cautioned Australia’s coin enthusiasts to purchase only through authorised dealers to avoid being misled. The official channels offer three specific products related to this new coin:
-
Gold Coin: Available in a presentation capsule and card, there are only 100,000 of these coins minted, priced between $20 and $22 each.
-
Roll of 25 Coins: Retailing for approximately $90 to $100, this option is limited to 15,000 rolls.
- Silver Proof Coin: This version, priced around $80, is limited to 7,500 units and presented with a certificate of authenticity and outer sleeve.
Despite these official prices, eBay listings have far surpassed them. Some sellers are attempting to sell a roll for around $599 plus an additional $65 for postage. Other listings include two silver coins priced at $440, and single silver coins being sold for upwards of $300, significantly more than retail.
The Royal Australian Mint highlighted that purchases from unauthorised sellers come with no guarantees regarding quality or authenticity, and any listings prior to the coin’s official release are deemed illegitimate.
The design of the new coin features the Torres Strait Islander flag on one side, with the opposite side showcasing an effigy of King Charles. The blue colour symbolises the ocean, green represents the land, and black pays homage to the Torres Strait Islander people.
Emily Martin, acting CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, remarked that the coin serves as "a meaningful tribute to culture, identity, and resilience," representing a proud reminder of Torres Strait Islander heritage. Mayor Phillemon Mosby expressed pride in seeing the flag represented on national currency, marking a historic moment for the community.
The coin will be available for purchase from 3 July at the Mint Shop in Deakin, Canberra, and select authorised distributors.
