Shaquille O’Neal on the NBA Dunk Contest: ‘It’s Been Disappointing’

by admin

Shaquille O’Neal has expressed his dissatisfaction with the recent state of the NBA All-Star weekend, particularly the slam-dunk contest, which he labelled as “sucky” over the last decade. Speaking to Yahoo Finance during a promotional event in New York City for his new partnership with retailer tm:rw, O’Neal lamented the lack of iconic dunk talent in the NBA today, contrasting it with a time when the best dunkers were among the league’s elite players.

O’Neal highlighted a notable trend: while many fans turn to platforms like YouTube to watch impressive dunks performed by non-NBA players, the current contest fails to showcase top-tier dunking talent. To address this gap, he has launched the Dunkman League, a professional organisation focused solely on elevating the “art and theatre of the dunk.” As the league’s first commissioner, Shaquille aims to transform dunking into its own competitive sport, moving it away from a mere exhibition act during halftime.

The Dunkman League will feature world-class “flight athletes” competing in exciting, high-stakes tournaments. A distinctive scoring system will be implemented, employing advanced technology—such as impact sensors and AI-driven motion tracking—to measure various aspects of each dunk, including vertical leap and “shatter force.” Shaquille has reportedly signed 24 dunkers as part of the league’s inaugural roster, with plans for the league to kick off in summer 2026. The winner will receive a prize of $500,000, enticing participants and fans alike.

Reflecting on the entertainment value of this new league, Shaquille noted his father’s advice that if fans are paying to witness a performance, they should be given a memorable show. He is determined to deliver on that promise.

Historically, the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has captivated audiences since its inception in 1976, with legends like Julius “Dr. J” Erving and the legendary battles between Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins solidifying its esteemed reputation. Vince Carter’s unforgettable performance in 2000 is often regarded as one of the most spectacular in the contest’s history. However, recent years have seen a decline in excitement, with the 2026 edition receiving mixed reviews, severely lacking the star power and innovative spirit that once defined it. Competing in the most recent contest were participants like Keshad Johnson and Carter Bryant, but names such as LeBron James were notably absent.

Critics pointed out that many dunks lacked originality, with some attempts described as basic and uninspired. For instance, criticism erupted when Jaxson Hayes attempted a standard dunk to lacklustre reactions, while Carter Bryant repeated similar concepts in the finals, raising eyebrows over the scoring he received from judges.

As O’Neal embarks on this initiative, the Dunkman League aims to rekindle the thrill of dunking, providing an engaging alternative to the current NBA contest model that fans have grown weary of. Through this venture, Shaquille O’Neal plans to reignite passion for the sport of dunking and deliver an exhilarating experience for audiences.
