Boost to Paid Parental Leave in Australia: What to Expect from July 2026

Starting July 1, 2026, Australian parents will benefit from an increase in paid parental leave, with the total duration being extended to 130 days, equivalent to 26 weeks. This change is part of the government’s initiative to enhance parental support, allowing families to manage the early stages of parenthood more comfortably.

Key Changes to Parental Leave Pay

  1. Duration Increase: Currently, parents whose children are born on or after July 1, 2025, are entitled to 120 days (or 24 weeks) of paid parental leave. This will extend to 130 days (or 26 weeks) for those with children born or adopted from the beginning of the 2026 financial year.

  2. Financial Implications: The increment in duration results in a potential government-funded leave payment of around $24,000 during this period. If parents apply for leave before July 2026, they will initially receive the existing entitlement of 120 days. However, upon providing proof of the child’s birth or adoption from July 1 onwards, an additional 10 days will be added to their leave balance.

  3. Partner Leave Adjustments: The amount of paid parental leave available to the other partner will also change, increasing from 15 to 20 days. Importantly, both parents will be able to take up to 20 days of leave simultaneously.

Eligibility Criteria for Parental Leave Pay

To qualify for parental leave pay, parents must meet specific income and work tests:

  • Income Test: For the 2024-25 financial year, eligible individual income must not exceed $180,007. Alternatively, families earning below $373,094 can use the family income test.

  • Work Test: Parents need to demonstrate they have worked a minimum of 330 hours over 10 of the 13 months preceding the child’s birth or adoption, equating to roughly one day a week.

Payment Structure and Increases

  • The parental leave payments are calculated based on the national minimum wage, which is scheduled for an increase on July 1, 2025. The daily rate for 2025-26 is projected to be $189.62, amounting to approximately $948.10 for a typical five-day work week.

  • With the extension from 120 to 130 days, parents can expect at least an additional $1,896.20 in their parental leave payments. It’s also worth noting that the government has been contributing superannuation on parental leave payments since July 1, 2025, adding 12% to the total.

Looking Ahead

These reforms in parental leave not only reflect the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting families during significant life transitions but also aim to foster a more balanced distribution of parental responsibilities. With the planned increase in parental leave pay, parents can better focus on their children without the financial stress often associated with taking leave from work.
