Starlink and US Mobile Unveil $47 Bundle to Boost Subscriptions Ahead of SpaceX IPO

Starlink, the satellite internet provider owned by SpaceX, has partnered with US Mobile to launch a series of discounted service bundles that combine home satellite internet and mobile data plans for a temporary period. This move coincides with SpaceX’s preparations for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO).

US Mobile, known for its multicarrier prepaid service, is offering these bundles to both new and existing customers, starting at $47 monthly. The most economical option pairs US Mobile’s basic unlimited mobile plan, priced at $17 each month, with Starlink’s residential service, which operates at $30 monthly and delivers download speeds of 100 Mbps.

US Mobile CEO, Ahmed Khattak, articulated the benefits of the new bundle on a Reddit post, stating, “We’re launching US Mobile + Starlink as a single bundle. Unlimited Standard or Premium on all three major US networks, plus reliable home internet from space. One plan. One bill. One app.”

Additionally, more extensive Starlink bundles are available at $77 per month for the 200 Mbps plan and $117 monthly for the Starlink Max service, which surpasses 400 Mbps. Comparatively, Starlink’s standalone plans without the bundled offer cost $50, $80, and $120 for the respective 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and Max services, highlighting substantial savings for customers who opt for the bundled deal.

US Mobile operates as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), leasing wireless network capabilities from larger carriers rather than owning the infrastructure outright. Its unique selling proposition allows customers to select their preferred network service: which they label as Dark Star (AT&T), Warp (Verizon), and Light Speed (T-Mobile).

However, the partnership with US Mobile raises eyebrows, considering that many telecommunications firms are hesitant to collaborate with SpaceX, fearing potential threats to their mobile business models. A source from within the telecommunications sector noted that major carriers might be frustrated with companies like T-Mobile for partnering with SpaceX, explaining that it grants SpaceX access to leverage their terrestrial spectrum in exchange for satellite spectrum, thereby positioning them to potentially establish their own carrier status.

Despite the risks, US Mobile sees a strategic opportunity; leveraging the combination of Starlink’s innovative satellite internet service with affordable mobile plans could significantly enhance its subscriber base. For Starlink, depending on the bundle’s appeal and the availability of kits, this initiative could substantially increase its subscriber numbers as it approaches its IPO.
