Virgin Australia Launches Innovative Flight Reward Comparison Tool
In a significant advancement for Australian air travel, Virgin Australia has unveiled its new flight search tool, described as an “Australian-first”. This cutting-edge feature is designed to streamline the process for travellers seeking to find and compare reward seats, cash fares, and points-plus-pay options all within a single calendar view.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Qantas’ introduction of a similar flight reward finder, which allows users to view all available international Classic Reward seats categorized by destination and cabin type over a 12-month period.
Progressive Rollout and Enhanced User Experience
Virgin Australia’s general manager, Alex Plummer, confirmed that the newly developed feature will be progressively implemented across the airline’s website and mobile app starting today, with complete accessibility expected for users by mid-year.
Currently, customers find themselves restricted to searching one route at a time, making it a challenge to compare available options and secure the best deals. Plummer emphasizes that this new tool revolutionises the booking experience by enabling customers to view all potential flight booking options within a single calendar, thereby unlocking broader choices across various dates and fares.
“This is a significant shift in the booking experience, offering customers a simpler and more transparent method to explore the flights that best meet their needs,” Plummer stated.
Future Developments and Comparisons with Qantas
Future enhancements to the calendar tool are set to include flights from international partner airlines such as Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and United Airlines. In contrast, Qantas’ tool operates as a standalone search option that already displays partner airline rewards across over 30 carriers, further allowing travellers to search region-to-region (e.g., Australia to Europe) instead of only city-to-city.
The tool, which has been developed in collaboration with technology firm Gyoza Flights, arrives amid Qantas’ revamp of its frequent flyer program, which includes novel methods for users to earn and maintain status.
Despite these advancements, Virgin Australia’s recent half-year results indicate that just 65% of points earned by Velocity members were redeemed from July to December, compared to 85% redemption among Qantas frequent flyer members. As the most popular airline loyalty program in Australia, Qantas boasts approximately 18 million members, whereas Virgin’s Velocity scheme follows with over 15 million.
Innovative Customer Initiatives from Virgin
Virgin Australia has recently initiated several customer-friendly developments, such as allowing pets on select domestic flights, implementing baggage tracking, and introducing middle seat reward programs, further enhancing the overall travel experience.
As the competition heats up between the two airline giants, the introduction of these innovative tools is expected to play a critical role in attracting and retaining customers, ultimately influencing their loyalty and choice in the evolving landscape of airline travel in Australia.
