McDonald’s (MCD) is set to transition away from its self-serve soda fountains by 2032, a move that will see these popular machines—offering a variety of drinks such as Hi-C, Fanta, Diet Coke, and Dr Pepper—being moved behind the counter. The announcement regarding the phasing out of self-serve soda stations was made in 2023, in an effort to ensure a more uniform experience for customers across different service channels, including app orders, delivery, kiosks, drive-throughs, and in-store dining. Tom Curtis, President of Burger King for the US and Canada, stated, “When they want a refill, they can have a refill,” affirming their commitment to customer wishes for hands-on beverage choices.

This transition aligns with a broader beverage strategy initiated by McDonald’s in late April, which introduced six new specialty drinks, including refreshing blends and “dirty sodas,” a hybrid of sodas enhanced with creamers and syrups. Borden mentioned that these new offerings represent the first steps towards evolving the beverage section at McDonald’s.
