US Stock Markets Experience Rebound, Led by Semiconductor Stocks

In a significant turnaround, major US stock indices rebounded from a sell-off influenced by Federal Reserve decisions, primarily driven by gains in the semiconductor sector. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, also known as the SOX, surged by 6.4%, hitting unprecedented heights, with Nvidia leading the charge as the foremost contributor to S&P 500 gains.

The technology sector as a whole saw an upswing, with substantial increases recorded for several key players. Micron Technology saw an impressive jump of 8.7%, while AMD, Broadcom, and Nvidia increased by 4.8%, 4.7%, and 2.9%, respectively. However, it wasn’t all positive; SpaceX experienced a decline of 3.5%, settling at $185 per share.

The overall market breadth displayed some weakness, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up just 0.14%. Meanwhile, the Equal-Weight S&P 500, which gives equal importance to all stocks, underperformed relative to its capitalisation-weighted counterpart by 62 basis points. In contrast, the Russell 2000 index, which tracks small-cap companies, outperformed the broader market, climbing 2.1% and reaching new all-time highs.

In commodities, Brent crude oil prices broke a five-day losing streak, rising 0.7% to settle at US$79.25 per barrel. Although current prices align with levels from early March, they still reflect a significant year-to-date increase of 30%.

Market dynamics have shifted in response to the Fed’s hawkish stance, with futures markets fully anticipating a rate hike by October. JPMorgan strategists have raised concerns, noting that increased volatility in semiconductor stocks could lead to significant market "tantrums" driven by Value-at-Risk (VaR) selling.

Additionally, the Japanese yen has weakened against the US dollar, reaching its lowest point in nearly two years, prompting discussions around potential government intervention to stabilise the currency.

This fluid financial landscape underscores the importance of closely monitoring both technological advancements and geopolitical shifts as they continue to influence global market conditions.
