Playdate Establishes Strict Policy: No AI Artwork Permitted, But Code Assistants Are Still in the Mix

Panic Inc. Prohibits Generative AI in Game Development for Playdate Console

Panic Inc., the esteemed game developer behind the Playdate console, has instituted a ban on games created with generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools from its Console storefront. This decision, aimed at upholding game quality and community standards, is effective from April 2026.

The ban specifically targets any games that incorporate AI tools for creative elements including art, music, and writing. However, the use of AI in coding will still be permitted, though such games will be clearly flagged, allowing customers to make informed decisions regarding their support.

In their “AI Disclosure” announcement, Panic clarified the types of generative AI tools that fall under this ban. This includes large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Claude, as well as AI image generation tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. Similarly, AI models for audio creation, such as MuseNet, are also included. Notably, traditional coding practices, such as creating custom functions for in-game behaviours, will remain unaffected by this restriction.

Panic’s co-founder, Cabel Sasser, expressed the company’s sentiment, stating this ban was a crucial step toward ensuring both the quality of games and the satisfaction of their community. Titles that have previously cleared approval using AI will still be available on the storefront but will carry a flag indicating their use of AI, thus ensuring transparency for customers.

The impetus for this policy change stems from customer reactions to the inclusion of "Wheelsprung," an AI-developed game that featured in the Playdate Season 2 premium bundle. Following feedback, Panic confirmed that all developers contributing to the upcoming Season 3 must refrain from using any form of AI, encompassing art, music, writing, and coding.

Panic admitted that it mistakenly allowed the inclusion of an AI-assisted game in the prior bundle, a misjudgment for which Sasser accepted full responsibility. The company did not foresee that an AI tool would be employed in a premium title by one of its developers.

As it stands, Panic Inc.’s decision underscores a commitment to traditional game development practices while aiming to foster a community centred around genuine creativity and artistry.
