Florida Governor Ron DeSantis: Utility Firms are Prohibited from Transferring AI-Driven Expenses to Customers

by admin

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking proactive measures to protect consumers from anticipated price hikes linked to utility companies. Speaking at the Milken Institute conference, he announced plans to sign a bill prohibiting these companies from raising rates in connection with contracts involving data centres powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

DeSantis pointed out the considerable investment flowing into energy-intensive data centres, which are essential for supporting the expanding AI sector. Despite this investment, he noted that Florida lacks large-scale data centres, primarily due to its warm climate. His critique also extended to the long-term employment prospects these centres offer, stating that they typically generate only a limited number of jobs for local communities.

The legislation, which DeSantis aims to enact by July 1, reflects growing public concern about the rising cost of electricity associated with AI data centres. Recent data from Morning Consult indicates that 69% of voters attribute higher electricity prices to these centres—a significant rise since tracking began in October. Furthermore, support for banning the construction of AI data centres in neighbourhoods has surged to 42%, up from 37% just six months ago.

The impending legislation underscores the challenges politicians and homeowners will face as electricity costs escalate in the wake of the AI boom. Governor DeSantis’s actions highlight a shift in focus towards maintaining consumer protection amid rapid technological advancements and their associated costs.

In summary, rising electricity prices linked to AI-driven data centres are increasingly seen as problematic for both policymakers and residents, indicating a potential backlash against such developments in the future.
