Elon Musk faces defeat in court against OpenAI as Samsung continues negotiations to prevent an impending strike.

A dispute over bonuses for semiconductor workers at Samsung in South Korea is causing a stir, with the possibility of a significant strike beginning on May 21. The labour union plans to cease work for 18 days, which would have widespread implications for global technology supply chains and the South Korean economy.

Negotiations are currently ongoing following an initial round of talks mediated by the government, which did not yield fruitful results. A South Korean court has partially intervened, potentially requiring workers to maintain attendance during the strike, as reported by Reuters.

The crux of the conflict lies in the distribution of bonuses. Samsung, the world’s leading manufacturer of memory chips, is projected to achieve operating profits of approximately $200 billion this year, driven by an unprecedented demand for chips. Employees are advocating for a 15% share of those profits, highlighting the tension between the company’s success and worker compensation.

Should the strike proceed as planned, it could impact 22.8% of South Korea’s total exports, which heavily depend on Samsung. This situation poses a risk not only for Samsung but also for various industries reliant on memory chips, including artificial intelligence (AI), gaming, and consumer electronics, such as laptops. Currently, supply bottlenecks are notable as AI data centres aggressively acquire memory and storage components to meet heightened market demand.

South Korea’s Prime Minister, Kim Min-seok, indicated that a mere day of halted operations at Samsung’s semiconductor facilities could result in direct losses upwards of 1 trillion won (approximately $667.68 million).

The ramifications of this potential strike are substantial, with projections suggesting that Samsung may face a profit drop of up to $20.3 billion should the workers execute their planned walkout.

As negotiations continue, the stakes remain high for both the company and its employees, as well as for the broader economic landscape in South Korea and beyond.
