Western Australia Announces New Cost-of-Living Payments for Residents
Western Australians are set to receive additional cost-of-living assistance with the announcement of two new financial support schemes, which will be implemented from July 2026. Among these measures is a one-off $100 Fuel Support Payment aimed at alleviating the burden of soaring fuel prices for drivers, alongside a financial boost for families with children enrolled in school.
Details of the Fuel Support Payment
The newly introduced Fuel Support Payment will be available to all holders of a valid Western Australian driver’s licence, encompassing learner, provisional, and extraordinary licence categories. Households eligible for the support can begin making claims on July 1 through the ServiceWA app, requiring a Digital ID for access. For those not inclined to utilise the app, alternative methods to claim the payment will also be provided.
Announced alongside these initiatives, Premier Roger Cook and Treasurer Rita Saffioti released details of the government’s budget, highlighting an impressive $3.5 billion surplus, bolstered by $9.3 billion from GST revenue anticipated for the next fiscal year. The government has noted that Western Australia enjoys the most affordable debt in the country, projected to be $34.5 billion by June 30, coming in $4 billion lower than previous forecasts.
According to Premier Cook, this year’s budget reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining a robust economy while addressing critical areas including job creation, health services, housing, and cost-of-living relief.
Support for Families with School-Aged Children
Additionally, families with children in school will benefit from the reinstatement of the WA Student Assistance Payment, designed to assist with various school-related costs such as uniforms, books, and excursions. This payment, now returning for its third consecutive year, will provide eligible families with $150 for each kindergarten or primary school student and $250 for each secondary school student.
Applications for this assistance will open on July 20 and can similarly be accessed through the ServiceWA app. The payment is applicable to students from kindergarten through to Year 12 in both public and registered non-government schools, as well as certain homeschoolers, mature-aged students pursuing their WACE, foster carers, and eligible international students.
To facilitate the application process, parents and guardians are advised to locate their child’s Western Australia Student Number (WASN), which can typically be found on school reports or NAPLAN results. Parents of children newly starting kindergarten or pre-primary this year who are yet to obtain a WASN are encouraged to contact their school for assistance.
Preparing for the Claims Process
The state government is promoting the use of the ServiceWA app as a convenient way to access these payments. Residents are encouraged to download or update the app and establish a Digital ID prior to the payment launch. A Digital Driver Licence feature is also expected to become available in the app later this year, further enhancing user convenience.
As the cost of living continues to affect households across the state, these initiatives are aimed at providing timely financial support to assist residents in managing essential costs more effectively.
Conclusion
The Western Australian government’s implementation of these financial support measures reflects a proactive approach to alleviating the pressures of rising living costs on its residents. With both fuel payments and student assistance on the horizon, families and drivers alike stand to benefit in the coming years. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for the application process to ensure they can make the most of this financial relief.
